About Cleansers

How to Choose the Right Cleanser

Start with how your skin feels an hour after you wash it. Tight or flaky? A cream, milk or cleanser for dry skin will be kinder. Shiny by lunchtime, or prone to breakouts? A gel or foaming wash with salicylic acid is a better fit. If your skin reacts easily, keep it fragrance-free and simple.

Cleansing Balms, Oils and Face Washes

Balms and oils are brilliant at melting away make-up and SPF, which is why they make such a good first cleanse. Face washes and gels clean the skin itself and leave it ready for whatever comes next. Plenty of people use both in the evening and just one in the morning. Not sure what follows your cleanser? Our skincare routine order guide walks you through it.

How To Double Cleanse

Discover the transformative power of double cleansing, a simple yet effective technique to remove makeup, dirt, and oil for a fresh, glowing complexion. Learn how to properly perform this essential skincare step with our easy-to-follow guide.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, Our Most Searched Cleanser

There's a reason this one has a cult following. The Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm starts as a solid, melts into an oil as you massage it in, then turns milky when you add water. It lifts make-up and SPF without leaving your skin feeling stripped. The original has a rose and mimosa scent. If fragrance isn't for you, go for the Naked version. Black Cherry and Green Fig give you a fruitier take on the same formula.

Salicylic Acid Cleansers for Oily and Blemish-Prone Skin

Salicylic acid is oil soluble, so it can get into your pores and clear out the build-up that leads to blackheads and breakouts. Using it in a cleanser is a gentle way to start, because it's only on your skin for a minute or so. iS Clinical Cleansing Complex is our bestseller overall. CeraVe Blemish Control Cleanser pairs salicylic acid with niacinamide, and Environ Sebu-Wash is a favourite for oily skin. Feeling dry or tight after a week? Swap to every other evening.

Expert Tip for Choosing a Cleanser

"Most people rush their cleanse, and that's where it goes wrong. Give it a full minute of massage so the formula has time to break down make-up and oil, then rinse with lukewarm water rather than hot. In the evening, double cleanse. Start with a balm or oil to melt everything away, then follow with a cleanser suited to your skin type. Mornings can be much simpler, a gentle wash is plenty."

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best cleanser for my skin type?

Oily or blemish-prone skin usually does well with a gel or foaming cleanser, ideally with salicylic acid. Dry skin prefers a cream, milk or balm that cleans without stripping. If your skin is sensitive, keep it simple and look for fragrance-free formulas. Still unsure? Our free online skin test will point you in the right direction.

What is double cleansing, and do I need to do it?

Double cleansing means using two cleansers in a row, usually an oil or balm followed by a water-based cleanser. The first breaks down make-up and SPF. The second cleans the skin itself. It's most useful in the evening, especially if you wear make-up or sunscreen every day. In the morning one cleanse is enough.

Can I use a cleansing balm on oily skin?

Yes. Oil dissolves oil, so a balm can be a really effective first step for oily skin. Massage it in, emulsify with water and rinse well, then follow with a gel cleanser if your skin still feels like it needs it.

Is a salicylic acid cleanser good for blemish-prone skin?

It's one of the best places to start. Salicylic acid works inside the pore to clear out excess oil and dead skin, which helps with blackheads and breakouts. Start once a day and build up. For leave-on treatments, have a look at our salicylic acid skincare.

What's the difference between CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and Foaming Cleanser?

The Hydrating Cleanser is a non-foaming cream for normal to dry skin, with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help keep moisture in. The Foaming Cleanser is a gel that lathers up, made for normal to oily skin. If you're blemish-prone, the Blemish Control Cleanser adds salicylic acid. You'll find all of them in our CeraVe range.

Which cleanser is best for sensitive skin?

Look for something gentle and fragrance-free, such as a cream or milk cleanser, and avoid scrubs or strong acids in your cleanse. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser and Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser are both popular choices. You can browse more in our sensitive skin edit.

How often should I cleanse my face?

Twice a day suits most skin types. If your skin is very dry or sensitive, you might find a splash of water in the morning and a proper cleanse at night works better. Over-cleansing can leave skin tight and irritated, so listen to how it feels.

Can I use micellar water instead of a cleanser?

Micellar water is great for removing make-up quickly, but it isn't a replacement for a proper cleanse. Think of it as a first step, then follow with your usual cleanser so nothing is left sitting on your skin.
