It feels unfair to have to choose between a golden glow or not battling a fake tan breakout. We all know the only safe way to ever get a tan is through what comes in the bottle, so it can feel frustrating when that same thing is causing you to breakout. No one wants a golden finish missing out their face.

When your skin is already prone to acne or congestion, it can make self-tan feel like one more thing destined to upset it. The formula you use, how you prepare your skin and what sits underneath your tan can all make a difference.

Here, Kimberley, Face the Future Clinic Manager, explains how to fake tan your face without breaking out and what to look for in a more acne-friendly formula.

Can You Self-Tan Your Face With Acne?

Yes, with a little more consideration, that's all. Facial skin can be more reactive than your body to fake tan ingredients, particularly when it is already dealing with active blemishes, painful breakouts, excess oil or congestion. Begin with a product designed specifically for the face rather than bringing your usual body tan up past your jawline. When choosing a facial tanner, it's important to check the ingredients.

Kimberley explains:

“Facial self-tanners can sometimes contribute to breakouts because they’re often formulated with richer ingredients than traditional facial skincare.”

Your skin is individual, so no product can promise that a breakout will never happen. However, choosing lighter textures and keeping the rest of your routine familiar may help reduce the likelihood of congestion.

Why Does Fake Tan Make My Face Break Out?

Sometimes, the formula itself is the issue. A rich formula may feel comfortable at first, but it can be too much for oily or blemish-prone skin, especially when combined with moisturiser, serums and other skincare layers.

“Heavy oils, certain emollients or fragranced formulas may clog pores, particularly in those who are already prone to acne or congestion,” says Kimberley.

Preparation matters. Always make sure to apply your tan to clean skin without any unnecessary build-up sitting underneath it. Kimberley explains, “Applying self-tan over skin that hasn’t been properly cleansed or exfoliated can trap oil, dead skin cells and bacteria beneath the product, increasing the risk of blemishes.”

What Fake Tan Won’t Clog Pores?

“Look for formulas labelled as non-comedogenic and specifically designed for the face. Lightweight, fragrance-free products are often better tolerated by blemish-prone skin.” - Kimberley

Non-comedogenic means the product has been formulated to minimise the likelihood of clogging pores. It is not a guarantee that every complexion will respond in exactly the same way, but it is a useful place to begin.

Kimberley also recommends looking for ingredients already familiar to many facial skincare routines:

“Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and niacinamide can also help keep skin hydrated without contributing to congestion.”

How To Fake Tan Your Face Without Breaking Out

  1. Start by cleansing your skin thoroughly to remove makeup, SPF, excess oil and the day’s build-up.
  2. If exfoliation is already part of your routine, use a gentle method your skin knows rather than introducing anything harsh immediately before tanning.
  3. Apply your chosen formula to clean skin and resist layering it over several rich products. The more you add underneath, the harder it becomes to know what your skin is reacting to.

For more control, Kimberley suggests tanning drops:

“If you’re prone to breakouts, tanning drops that can be mixed into your usual moisturiser are often a great alternative, as they allow you to customise your glow while keeping the rest of your skincare routine consistent.”

When Self-Tan Still Doesn’t Suit Your Skin

Even carefully chosen non-comedogenic self-tanning drops for sensitive faces may not suit everyone. If your skin regularly becomes congested after self-tanning, a temporary alternative could be a better fit.

“For those who regularly struggle with acne, bronzing drops or complexion-enhancing SPF products can provide a healthy-looking glow without the longer wear time of self-tan.”
