Could Your Cleanser Be Ruining Your Skin Regime?

Could Your Cleanser Be Ruining Your Skin Regime?

The first “ and possibly most overlooked “ step in a skincare regime is cleansing. We spend hours researching the latest antioxidant and innovative peptide ingredients and hard-earned money buying them. So why is it when it comes to cleansers, we are far less discerning? Often selecting a cleanser based on the lowest price, a familiar brand or a current offer.

Being clued up on your cleansers is more important than you may think. In fact, using the wrong cleanser can be the root cause of many skin concerns. No amount of moisturisers, antioxidants or SPF's is going to fix a poorly cleansed face. Start as you mean to go on with your skin routine and become a pro at the very first step!

What is a cleanser?

A cleanser is a facial skincare product that is used to remove makeup, dirt, oil, dead skin cells and other pollutants from the skin and face.

When should I use it?

Cleansers should be used morning and night, I also recommend using after exercise, throughout the day or anytime makeup needs removing.

What type of cleanser should I use?

A cleanser is so much more than just a face wash; in reality, it is the first treatment step in preparing your skin for a continued skincare regime. Using the right cleanser will benefit your skin and encourage the best results, just like using the wrong cleanser can cause breakouts, impair skin's natural barrier function and cause over sensitivity.Choosing the right cleanser can take some time, but you can follow our ultimate cleanser guide below to make it extra simple

Gel

Best for: Congested/Acne prone skinGel cleansers are normally clear with a thick consistency. They are good for removing excess oil and de-clogging blocked pores. Many gel cleansers contain antibacterial ingredients to help control acne prone skins. Gels are ideal for deep cleansing; however beware of strong and harsh ingredients that can over strip the skin and cause disruption to the barrier.

Cream or Milk

Best for: Sensitive/Mature/Dry skinSome cleansers contain emulsifiers that strip oil from the skin; this results in the squeaky clean sensation many people love. However this can have negative implications for the skin and result in an over sensitised skin, impaired barrier or the over production of oil in a bid to replace lost moisturise.A cleansing milk or cream is an extra gentle formula with a silky smooth texture. These cleansers don't foam but instead works by dissolving makeup, dirt and impurities. This means it won't strip the skin with harsh chemicals and encourages hydration. If you wear heavy makeup, be sure to double cleanse to ensure complete removal. Water isn't required for cleansing milks, making them ideal for travelling.

Oil

Best for: Eczema/Dry/Sensitive skinThe theory behind oil cleansers is: oil attracts oil. When you use an oil-based cleanser on the skin, it binds with skin's naturally occurring oil “ sebum “ to remove oil, dirt and makeup. Cleansing oils can help balance out the skins pH and prevent dryness that can be experienced with other cleansers. Oil cleansers are less popular as some people find the consistency doesn't suit their skin and can make some skin conditions worse.

Foam

Best for: Acne prone/Oily skinFoaming cleansers are what most people envisage when thinking of a face wash. However, there is some controversy around this type of cleanser as they can be too harsh for many skins. If your skin is acne prone or oily, this could be the best option for you as foaming cleansers often contain antibacterial ingredients such as salicylic acid and glycolic acid. If your skin is dry or sensitive, this type of cleanser should be avoided.

Cleansing tips

  • If you wear heavy makeup always follow up with a second cleanse. The first cleanse should remove cosmetics, the second cleanse is to treat the skin.
  • Don't use hot water. Studies have shown using too much heat can dry out the skin, increasing the risk of irritation and damaging facial capillaries. Instead use tepid/lukewarm water.
  • Use a cleansing mitt to help gently exfoliate dead skin cells whilst cleansing. Always remember to hot wash your mitt after each cleanse to avoid the build up of bacteria.
  • Always follow up your cleanse with other skincare products prescribed by your skin specialist. It's important to have a skincare regime that compliments your individual skin type.
